At my college washing machines, they do not have different sections for the laundry detergent?

and the fabric softener so i added both of them together. Will doing this make something happen to my clothes. I read other info and it says to add it in during the rinse cycle but the thing is that it doesnt tell you when the rinse cycle is. It just tells me how many minutes there are left. It starts out with 37 mins just to let you know.
