Need help or suggestions backpacking through Europe?

I planning on going to Europe for 2 1/2 weeks in mid October. I plan on going to Rome, Florence, Venice, munich, and maybe zurich.. I have never been overseas before. I know many people travel by using the railway. Can anyone give me any suggestions about being over there? How much money to take, any suggestions about places to go Thanks
