I think an increase in biodiversity provides stability and is definitely a positive for an ecosystem. Biodiversity leaves an ecosystem less vulnerable by decreasing the likelihood that one particular event or events will kill all or most life. The more life that is killed at once, the harder it is for an ecosystem to recover. With a biologically diverse ecosystem, it is more likely that the ecosystem will survive environmental stresses like natural or man-made disasters, or climate change.
