Inovonics Universal Transmitter? What's the use of this?

Management of my building placed one of this transmitters in my bedroom and said that it is to measure the room temperature of my apartment. They only placed one of this in my bedroom and in no other place of the apartment. What are the uses of this transmitters? Can they use that transmitter to really gather information of the temperature? What are the uses of this thing? I was looking for info but couldn't find anything concrete.
