Question about farmville on facebook?

I keep seeing applications for farmville gifts where supposedly you can go and send gifts to your friends. For example, one had a baby elephant which expired quite a while ago. There was another app where you could send manor's and so forth. Do any of these apps actually work? I've tried to send gifts with them but you can never use any of the items. Why would they make stupid apps like this if you can't actually use them in the game. If you have any answers I'd appreciate the help. Thanks guys! Also, if you know of any tricks please let me know.
